"There's something - a kind of double surrealism - about combining retro images with people and the vastness of space."

Philosopher and artist Jonas Hæg

Jonas, tell us a little bit about yourself - who are you?

I grew up in Norway but moved to England in 2013 to study philosophy. I find it very difficult to make changes, so I just stayed in England and continued studying philosophy (I will be doing my PhD in 2022). Before I moved here, I already started working with digital art. My father is an artist and I used to play Photoshop on his computer as a kid. But it wasn't until I started college and felt like I needed a hobby that I really got into digital collage art. Although it started as a hobby, it has grown into something much bigger and more important in my life.

How did you discover your creativity?

My parents are both quite "artsy" (an artist and an interior designer) so I think I was "exposed" to a lot of art as a kid. This probably contributed to my creative development. I've always wanted to be an artist, but I'm pretty bad at painting and drawing. It wasn't until I discovered "digital" art that I felt like I found an outlet through which to channel my own creativity. And of course I was influenced by a number of other digital artists that I discovered early on - the biggest influence is probably Eugenia Loli.

Where do you get your inspiration from?

Space and vintage aesthetics! There is something about the double surrealism of combining retro images with people and the vastness of space. Additionally, I get my inspiration from just browsing through stock photos. Part of the fun of creating collages is having an idea and looking for images that can bring your vision to life. They'll never be exactly what you envisioned, of course, but it's part of the fun and uniqueness of collages. Lately I've also started incorporating more 3D art into my work. The opportunities there are endless and I find so much inspiration in just trying new things.

What do you think wall art can bring into a home?

Very much! It is important to me that a home feels warm and welcoming. I also think it's a great way for people to express something of their own personality or style. I think the art on the walls can tell a lot about its people.

What do you have on your walls at home?

Ironically, nothing at the moment. I just moved to a new place and all my old murals disappeared or broke during the move. But I really like colours. I almost always have a bit of Hockney and Lichtenstein on the walls! I'm also a fan of the aesthetics of old movie posters - that's probably why I try to imitate them in my own art as well.

Working together with Printler

Printer is great! It's very easy to upload artworks, which is important for artists who want to focus their time mostly on the creation process. It also warms my Scandinavian heart to be able to work with a company based in Sweden.
